Sunscreen and Spreadsheets: 7 Strategies To Navigate The Summer Holidays as an Entrepreneur

As an entrepreneur, balancing work and personal life can be a challenge, but summer makes it even trickier. With my kid out of school, family trips, and the temptation of beautiful sunny days calling me outside, I find myself having to adjust my routine significantly to balance it all.

We all want to be present for our families and enjoy the season, but also keep the business running smoothly. Based on my experience, I want to share 7 key strategies that have helped me manage the summer months, while keeping both my business and personal life going:

  1. Embrace Flexible Working Hours: One of the perks of being an entrepreneur is the ability to set your own schedule. Use this flexibility to your advantage during the summer. Start your workday earlier or later to accommodate family activities and enjoy the long daylight hours. Flexibility allows you to be present for important family moments without sacrificing your business responsibilities.

  2. Prioritize and Delegate: Identify the most critical tasks that require your direct attention and delegate the rest. Delegation not only lightens your workload but also empowers your team.

  3. Set Boundaries: Set clear boundaries between your work and personal time. Let your team and clients know when you're available, and stick to your schedule. When you're with your family, focus completely on being present.

  4. Plan Ahead: Anticipate busy times and organize your workload accordingly. If you have a family vacation planned, finish major projects ahead of time or schedule them for a quieter period. Planning in advance lowers stress and lets you relax during your time off without work concerns.

  5. Leverage Technology: Make use of technology to stay connected and productive wherever you are. Utilize cloud-based tools (I love Trello for example), video conferencing, and project management apps to run your business from any location. This allows you to handle urgent tasks without being stuck at your desk, giving you the flexibility to enjoy summer activities with your family.

  6. Take Regular Breaks: Don't overlook the importance of taking short breaks throughout the day. Step outside, take a walk, or even go for a quick swim to recharge your mind and body. Regular breaks can significantly enhance productivity and creativity, allowing you to come back to work with renewed energy and focus.

  7. Schedule Downtime: Just like you schedule meetings and deadlines, make sure to schedule downtime for yourself and your family. Whether it’s a weekend getaway, a day at the beach, or simply taking an afternoon off, prioritize time for relaxation and enjoyment. Downtime is crucial for recharging and maintaining your overall well-being.

Like most of us, I’m trying to figure out life as an entrepreneur and parent, but by implementing these strategies, I've been able to enjoy the summer with my loved ones while keeping my business on track.

Remember, a healthy balance not only benefits you but also enhances your productivity and overall satisfaction. So, take the time to enjoy the summer with your loved ones, and let it be a season of growth and fulfillment for both your personal and professional life.

xx
