Why is this so important?
When you know what success looks like, you can start making decisions that will move your business into the right direction - a direction that is actually motivating and meaningful to you.
In this article, I’m sharing examples of what success could look like, and I’ll walk you through an exercise to help you use your purpose to figure out what success looks like for you.
Sound good? Let’s go!
Identifying Meaningful Measures of Success
In business, there’s a tendency to follow a path of what you think you’re “supposed to do”. Often, this simply means growing your revenue. But the reality is, success looks different for everyone and while growth is an excellent driver for some, it may not be fulfilling for everyone.
So, if not growth, then what?
Success in business, just like success in life, all depends on what ultimately drives you: your purpose.
What Is Purpose?
If you know your purpose as a business, figuring out how to set goals and measuring success becomes simple. But what is purpose?
To put it simply, your purpose is the reason you do what you do and why it matters. Even if you don’t think of your business as a mission-driven company, chances are you have a valid purpose; a reason to exist in the world. (If you’d like to explore this further, you might enjoy reading our blog on how to workshop your mission and vision).
Using Purpose To Measure Success
Once you know your purpose (your WHY), the next step is to consider what your company does to achieve its purpose (your what). From there, you can measure your success based on how much progress you’ve made towards achieving your purpose.
If this sounds a bit abstract, let’s use an example: at The Emms, our purpose is to help small to mid-sized companies, startups, and entrepreneurs achieve their goals. We do this by offering end-to-end marketing services, marketing training and advice, as well as consulting to help our clients.
Using our definition, success means that with the help of our work, our clients make progress towards achieving their goals. So, we measure our own success by looking at each client’s specific marketing and business goals.
These goals could include a range of things:
Increasing headcount
Getting positive customer feedback
Winning a dream client
Meeting financial targets
Launching a new product
Winning an important award
Securing funding
Raising funds for an important cause
Solving a critical challenge
Being featured in the news or a publication
Having a positive impact on the world
Making people’s lives better
And more…
